Vocational Training in Multimedia eContent Localisation: Developing shareable and customisable resources for vocational training in multimedia eContent localisation
eCoLoMedia aims to cater for all those interested in the novel activities of translating multimedia content, such as film subtitling or the localisation of Flash animations and video games. The authentic materials it produces will support practitioners wanting to extend their skill set and trainers wanting to update their translation courses. Trainers can also download teaching scenarios.
The training materials – in the form of ‘localisation kits’ – are available as and when produced in English, French, German, Polish, Romanian, and Spanish. This website will be published in English, French and German.
The eCoLoMedia project builds on the rich experiences gained through the eCoLoRe and eCoLoTrain projects, which have already enabled a large number of trainers to familiarise themselves and their students with localisation and translation tools, including those in tertiary educational establishments which had not previously had access to such opportunities.

Objectives
eCoLoMedia targets trainers and teachers of professional translation, localisation and cultural adaptation in academe, professional bodies and industry.
Trainers face three difficulties: their own lack of computer skills and training in specialised tools; keeping pace with a changing profession; and the lack of training materials, in the form of digital files covering different languages for use in the classroom. more
Previous projects
The eCoLoMedia project builds on the rich experiences gained through the eCoLoRe and eCoLoTrain projects, which have already enabled a large number of trainers to familiarise themselves and their students with localisation and with translation tools, including in third-level educational establishments which have not previously had access to these techniques or tools.
The former projects also demonstrated that there was a strong interest in bringing together stakeholders from different cultural, institutional and professional backgrounds.
Partnership
eCoLoMedia brings together
- universities and recognised institutes of higher education from Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Ireland, and Romania;
- representatives from the translation profession, in the form of Belgian and British translation associations, who will help the project develop accurate insights into the needs of the profession and into best practice in this field, from the viewpoints of content developers, translators and educators;
- content developers who will provide the multimedia materials -- private companies, universities and public broadcasting institutions;
- a software developer who will provide localisation tools;
- an independent expert responsible for quality control of the project. more
